HO CHI MINH CITY INVESTS NEARLY 3,000 BILLION VND TO BUILD A STRATEGIC INTERCHANGE CONNECTING CAN GIO
06/19/2026
Ho Chi Minh City has officially approved the construction of an interchange connecting Rung Sac Road with the Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway, with a total investment of nearly VND 3 trillion funded by the city budget. The project is expected to create a major breakthrough in transportation infrastructure, enhance regional connectivity, and unlock the development potential of Can Gio District in the coming years. According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the project has a total investment of approximately VND 2.97 trillion and is considered one of the city's key transportation infrastructure projects aimed at completing the transportation network in the southern area of Ho Chi Minh City.
Completing the Gateway Connection to Can Gio
The interchange is designed in a diamond configuration, ensuring seamless connectivity between the Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway and Rung Sac Road, the main transportation corridor leading to Can Gio.
The section connecting the Can Gio Bridge area to the district center will be developed to urban arterial road standards, with a design speed of 80 km/h and six traffic lanes. Parallel roads will be constructed on both sides of the route, meeting the standards of primary local streets to serve internal traffic demands within the area.
For the section from Rung Sac Road to Binh Khanh Ferry Terminal, the route will be upgraded to urban main road standards, featuring a design speed of 60 km/h and four traffic lanes. The upgrade is expected to accommodate growing transportation demand as Can Gio develops into Ho Chi Minh City's marine economic and eco-tourism hub.
Synchronized Investment in Modern Infrastructure
In addition to the road network, the project includes the expansion of two existing elevated bridge sections along the Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway to meet future operational requirements.
Furthermore, four new on- and off-ramps will be constructed, each consisting of a single lane, enhancing connectivity and improving the efficiency of expressway operations.
The entire interchange area will be developed with a comprehensive infrastructure system, including underpasses, roundabouts, drainage facilities, street lighting, landscaping, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), vehicle weight control stations, and modern traffic signal systems, meeting the operational requirements of a major transportation hub.
Promoting Regional Connectivity and Economic Growth
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the project will establish a new radial transportation corridor connecting the city center with the communes of Binh Khanh, An Thoi Dong, Tam Thon Hiep, Long Hoa, and Ly Nhon.
Once operational, the project will not only facilitate travel and freight transportation but also help reduce traffic pressure on existing routes, alleviate congestion, and improve road safety throughout the area.
More importantly, the new interchange will strengthen connectivity between Can Gio and industrial zones, urban developments, and eco-tourism destinations along the Rung Sac corridor, creating significant opportunities for local socio-economic development.
From a regional perspective, the project will establish a continuous transportation corridor linking the Mekong Delta and Southeast Region to Can Gio via Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 3, the Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway, and Rung Sac Road. This will significantly shorten travel times while enhancing logistics connectivity and attracting investment to the southern area of the city.
Integrated with Key Infrastructure Projects
The effectiveness of the project is expected to be further amplified as several strategic infrastructure developments are being accelerated.
Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 3 is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, while the nearly 58-kilometer Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway is planned to be fully opened to traffic in September 2026.
Notably, Phuoc Khanh Bridge—the most critical component of the Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway—has currently reached approximately 80% completion. According to the contractor, the bridge is expected to achieve structural closure by mid-July 2026 and be fully completed by September 2026. This milestone will pave the way for the synchronized operation of the entire expressway, contributing to the completion of the strategic transportation network in Southern Vietnam.
